The ZF8 is absolutely amazing. In manual mode it down- and up-shifts instantly. With BMW programming, it will downshift under hard braking, in sport mode it seems to downshift pretty aggressively.

That’s what I was going to suggest. All other factors aside, torque converter autos run and shift very smoothly, and Audi is a “luxury” company.
From what I know working at a transmission company we can only blame consumers, torque converters have better “launch performance” meaning they are smooth to accelerate rather than the sometimes jerky slow launches on dual clutch. It sucks but blame the people who can’t control their right foot
