I think this movie is sadly underrated. It's like a third season TOS episode - but that means it is very much a Star Trek movie, which cannot always be said for other installations.

I agree with your point, but I might point out that science fiction touts itself as a genre that embraces "the other", and so might be taken to task for those working in said genre who are closed-minded on such issues, as compared to, say romance or historical fiction.

While one could say that rejection of incrementalism denies the messy reality of technological advancement, it might also be an internal (to Google) thought that equates incrementalism with complacency - or at least a certain commercialism, which looks to maximize the bottom line by milking…
