I'm praying for an MR2 return. It'll probably cost in the 30-40k range... but I can live with my 1.5 until the new one depreciates enough that I could afford it.
But I know the feeling. Old toyotas make my naughty bits tingle, but the new ones make me want to run the other way :(

E46 323i was really 2.5L (have one outside), but when they refreshed and went to 325i, all they did was play with the cam timing/duration/VANOS to tease out the extra power (from what I've read). Still 2.5L.
Could be something similar?
Love that picture, and exactly my thoughts. It's underpowered compared to 90's 20V corollas, and its still FWD (which doesn't really matter to target audience, but it matters to us!).
Is it me, or are the power numbers pretty sad?
A 1990's Corolla sporting the 20v 1.6L 4A-GE coughed out 160-165 hp (depending on engine variation), yet these two modern, bigger, "better" powerplants are making 20-30 hp less...

You speak the truest of truths. It's sad how they went from making amazing driver-oriented machinery (GT-Four, Supra, MR2's) to some of the most boring vehicles in recent years. My first car was a 1993 Camry V6 5MT, and my old coworker's 2005 Corolla S made it feel like a like an E30 in comparison.

360 out of two litreis doesn't make it undriveable... It's all in the tuning and turbo sizing though, I've driven a 400whp Evo and that thing was good even in traffic. With an auto box however, I could foresee issues if it wasn't tuned just right...
