This was also due to the oil used on the filter. That oil would get sucked into your intake tract. This was one of the things that led to many failed MAF’s on VWs (probably other cars too).

I owned one of these for a couple years. Never get into a front end accident. The parts are SUPER expensive and hard to find. Try pricing the headlights.
