Actually I was at a conference last year where BMW presented work on their laser headlights and they discussed the motivation was to make the headlight aperture on the front of the car as small as possible. My guess is this is so they maximize grill size (though not stated).

GOOD!! I like how IIHS rates headlights and they take the glare to oncoming traffic into consideration when rating them.
