I always wonder what kind of stats they use to determine when they should close down servers. Older stuff like Killzone 2 is still online, so I assume it has a healthy population of players, or at least enough to make them worth still having servers up.

I doubt it does. Even though the PS4 (technically speaking) supports 3D gaming, not a single game has used that feature, and new PS3 games haven't used it since Sony stopped pushing 3D so hard in mid 2013.
