Already got a kernel of a story, so I'm definitely going for this.
@jmcm: Yeah I'd like to know that too. Fine with me if they do, because $2000 is way more than most mags pay.
@CodenameV: Ah, that's why I didn't get in- I'm only 24.
@Mazarin: Less dramatic change, but I just moved from Northampton MA, home to 30,000, where you can see perhaps a hundred stars and very rarely, very faintly, the arc of the galaxy, to Sunderland MA, home to 3000, where the galaxy including central bulge is incredibly bright, you can see thousands of stars, and often…
@maliciastarling: Yeah, I just really doubt that I have the time or patience to do it. The longest thing I've ever written was 20,000 words, and that took me better than six months. And I realized a year later that it needed a total rewrite.
@t3knomanser: Yeah, it took me all last month just to write less than twice that and actually be mostly happy with it.
I'll settle for trying to get the short story I wrote last month sold this month. Maybe I'll do NaNoWriMo next year.
@dry-roasted-peanuts: The Empire is fascist, which is a far, far-right position. Don't confuse liberal vs. conservative with authoritarian vs. libertarian; compare the Empire's rightwing authoritarianism to Stalinism's leftwing authoritarianism, the Culture's leftwing libertarianism, or the Lunar settlers' rightwing…
@Fauxcused: A family company.
@collex: Yeah but I always had the impression, even reading it as a kid myself, that 'young reporter' meant 18 or 20, not 13 or 14 as he appears here.
I really like AxCrypt for the fact that it shreds the originals of files when it encrypts them.
@bakana: Yeah, at first I was excited because I remembered Weta's cool concept video for this from a while back, and of course because of Carpenter, but then I remembered that io9's post on the test footage had inspired me to actually attempt to read the comic. And it was bad. The main character exists to give teen…
@timgray: Most of the $50 Levi's I've seen are made of much thinner material than the $15 Wrangler jeans I buy.
@ParryLost: Doing them to scale would mean the Earth would fill up your monitor and the asteroids would be a pixel or two, way off screen.
@GeneralBattuta: I don't think current thinking does point to a spatially infinite universe, though: due to inflation, it's much larger than what we can see, a hundred billion lightyears diameter or more compared to the 25-30 billion we can see, but not infinite.
I don't get why Eli's mom's illness is somehow 'lame'- it's not just that she's lost the will to live and that's somehow causing her to die a la Padme in RotS, she has HIV and her lack of will to live is causing her not to take her meds.
She wouldn't be half so creepy if she didn't have frakking Cylon legs.
