OSC's douchiness aside, the prequels to the sequels just got very tedious. I actually enjoyed the series all the way through Children of the Mind, and I know a lot of people didn't care for those books. But the Shadow of the Hegemon stuff was clearly written when he was getting loopier and loopier.

This one sadly went on past the author's expiration date.
