A Swedish couple drove all the way to India and Vietnamin a Saab 900 with a Toppola... several times. It’s been covered on Jalopnik before, but here’s their own site.

Something that breaks down a lot, thereby enabling me to meet lots of interesting people and garagistes.
Someone else’s.
How about 1980s Skyline GTR? Or Datsuns?
Of vehicles I can actually afford, this would be my choice. My wife has a ‘19, last fall we drove it a 1000 miles to new mexico, air down the tires and drove it up the most challenging trails we could find for a week then aired up the tires and drove it home. No problems, and just as comfortable at doing 80 mph down…
“In that case, what about a Fiat Panda?”
During a round-the-world trip SOMETHING will go wrong, so you need a vehicle that is easy to fix, parts are readily available, and doesn’t cost an-arm-and-a-leg to repair. A “generic” Toyota (Corolla), VW (Golf), or any of their derivatives.

Both the Lan Rover and the Silver Shadow are excellent choices, pretty much anything these people come up with would do nicely as well.

Toyota Hilux with a shell over the bed. Damn near bullet proof. If needed you could find parts for it pretty much anywhere. If you get into trouble in a seedy part of the world, put a machine gun on top and blend in with the local warlords.
Mitsubishi Delica.
