The Wii won by sales sure but most of the people who bought a Wii weren't the 'gamer' audience we usually count nor did it have any explosive must have games especially from 3rd party. This is why the Wii was never counted and it was always 360 vs PS3 because they were the only ones fighting for the core gamer market.

They've been closing the gap worldwide since launch. Europe, 3rd world countries, Japan etc all were shaving the lead the 360 had. Then around 2009 - 2011 the PS3 was beating the 360 even in the US every other month.
