From what I read above it sounds like he was given the money to buy the gun himself. So basically the money was a gift and he bought a gun with it. Also he might have had more than one gun. He bought the one he did the shooting with himself.

My favorite is when people talk about getting them to “protect” their home like life is some kind of fucking lethal weapon movie. Meanwhile it just increases the chance that the people they are trying to protect will be hurt by that gun by a billion percent. You are better off putting a crocodile pit around your house.
