Much of Nintendo's higher ups are from a previous era and they have outlived their usefulness for the most part. Their knowledge has waned, they aren't in touch with today's world and obviously aren't in touch with the technologies of today and what people want/expect from a game console.

"You own them forever ", yeah thats a good one. The lifespan of discs can Vary considerably. Some may hold 20 years under direct sunlight, others may rot in less then 2 years in their sealed casing, and that's not counting other damages that may occur.

What will you do when disc media is phased out completely? Keep an old PC around that has a working DVD or Blu-ray drive? What if you no longer have any versions of your OS that support DVD or Blu-ray drives/drivers?

Presently EA's doing significantly better than Activision. Battlefield continues to do pretty great, the ME3 backlash is over, Battlefront 3 will sell shitloads, they've got new Mass Effect and Dragon Age on the way, the second of which looks very promising from what we've seen.
