Au contraire: The reason most taxis reach ridiculously high mileages is the constant running (or keeping of running temperature). Hours and hours of idling induce less tear and wear than a single cold start.

Exactly! It's also basically the same way electronic diff "locks" work: the ABS/ESP/ETS whatever box brakes one wheel (normally the spinning one) and forces the torque to the other wheel (that hopefully still has grip).
