OK, and the show in Vegas will be a full, four stage competition of the best qualifiers. It is all just a way to stretch the show into more than a two hour special.

The Japanese show has the same kind of qualifying rounds which they do not show on tv.

We usually catch the last 10 seconds of Girls before the Game of Thrones replay, and it is the most intriguing 10 seconds of the evening!

I think it's a competition to see who gets to go to Japan and do the real thing. That, or the finals in America will have all 4 stages. I'm not sure which. This is just qualifying to go to the big show. Also, they want to fill many nights of TV, so it is spread out.

Don't worry about the hours. Play it. Do what side quests you want, or don't. But keep in mind, it has one of the best endings of any video games ever.
