If you’re old enough to remember ‘70s print SF, the comparison I like to make is that Steven Universe is Fred Saberhagen’s “Berserker” series if it had been written by James Tiptree, Jr. It is arguably the deepest and best-written science fiction I’ve seen on television since Babylon 5.

Steven Universe was created by one of Adventure Time’s best directors (Rebecca Sugar gave us episodes like Simon & Marcy and It Came From the Nightosphere) so if you like AT, you’re almost certain to like Steven. SU even seems to be on a similar story trajectory to Adventure Time, where it starts out as a fun comedy…
