That definition has nothing to do with a view of a geocentric universe, though. From our perspective, anything outside of Earth is outer space. That's the relevant usage. Earth would be outer space to a Martian, but we aren't on Mars. Just like anything from another planet is an alien.

Well the article says being thrown into the vacuum of space, not into space. So it’s people being thrown from non-vacuum space to vacuum space. Whether or not Mars has enough atmosphere to be considered a vacuum or not is another issue.
