I also play as an American (even tho I'm nowhere near the continent) because of the stoopid eshop region thing. When I play its usually Europeans; France, Norway, UK, some Japan, very few US. Probably because they are all asleep.

Never had a problem of having too few players online. Always joined to a full or almost full game and even if the players dwindled to 2 it only takes a couple of races to build it up again, although its easier to just exit and try again.
