I would have more expected them to go poof in a cloud of dust. Animators still get to play with some fancy effects and you don't have to go straight to blood splats.

Honestly no clue whatsoever. My only guess was since it wasn't long after shifting from elementary to jr high, there were all these new people to make friends with and we no longer shared as many similar classes.
