Yes, her vids are the thesis. And I never said her vids are the basis of her debate, the aftermath of it however is.

If you write a masters thesis you still have to defend it. In fact, depending on the subject this could take several days. You have to defend your argument, this is called a debate.

"I'd suggest that no matter where the discussion happens, bad apples are going to pop up. Does this mean we shouldn't have the conversation at all? I'd rather just, y'know, have some good moderation shutting them down. I'm doing my best not to reply to the nasty comments that seem to agree with me, for instance."

" She also needs to understand that most of the time, the Game devs don't really do this stuff on purpose"

But that's not really relevant. When I'm looking at a piece of media, my primary concern is not the author's intent. My concern is the text of the actual work. It doesn't really matter if the developers are doing

"She isnt for equality, she wants women to be lifted up. "

Oh please. This is basically the same thing you see any time anyone makes any point even TANGENTIALLY related to feminism.

Also, the point of her videos isn't debate, because that's not how these things work. If I write a master's thesis, I don't write it in

The Jack Thompson comparison is and always has been bullshit. She's not calling for banning or restricting anything. Hell, practically all of her videos begin with a GIANT DISCLAIMER where she talks about how it's okay to like things with problematic elements. She's not even saying that any individual instance is

Doc, I respect you, but I disagree with you pretty strongly on this.

There's probably a reasonable discussion to be had about the points she raises, but the venue is important. The problem right now is that any criticism of her is latched on to by the regressive, inbred man-children who use it as an excuse to try to

Remember that the next time you complain about literally anything in a game (bugs, short campaign, always-online policies, etc.)

I know you said you're done (which, by the way, I'm totally okay with), but...my "master"? Grow the fuck up.

Ah, okay. Fair enough.

That's what kills me. There are probably legitimate discussions to be had about some aspects of her videos. But instead, the critics try to focus on these "gotcha" counter-examples that don't actually prove what they think they do except in the most cursory, surface-reading way. In discussing the most recent video, I

"so you agree with his ludicrous devil's advocate analogy that because a game allows you to fall to your death that that is not only encouraged by the game but encourages it in real life too?"

As I pointed out in my other response to you, that is just about the dumbest part of the whole goddamned video.

"or that the

"WATCH THE VIDEO. the whole thing about hitman and watchdogs is DEAD ON."

It's really not. At least those bits aren't quite as dumb as the "But GTA also lets you fall to your death! Do we think it's making you want to fall to your death in REAL LIFE?" argument. That one is a real gem.

Let me pick an example. He talks

You mean the part around 3:00, where he talks about how, because the game penalizes players for killing innocent people, her points are somehow totally invalid?

Yeah, no. Not a rebuttal. If her point had been that the point of the game was to kill those women, then yes, that would be a valid rebuttal. That was not her

It's not that simple.

Cute.

Seriously, though, the video you posted, which you apparently think is a "rebuttal" of some kind, is just...it's really not good.

No, it's not.

I can make a pretty comprehensive list of games in which men are victimized while being sexually objectified. It's not hard. It's not even a particularly long list.

Except that the "lying and misrepresenting facts" that people usually try to bring up with her are...not anything of the sort. They're people objecting to specific examples she uses because they don't understand (or choose to ignore) the context in which she is using them.

That video is really, really terrible. I mean, really. It's lazy, intellectually dishonest, and totally ignores context.

What do I hope to accomplish? What does anyone hope to accomplish when they criticize anything?

Some artists will hear the criticism and take it to heart; after all, more than one developer has said that, until someone took the time to articulate these issues to them, they really hadn't given them a second thought.
