I played the first Metal Gear (the NES one, and yes, I know it wasn't really the "first" one) more than any of the MGS games. And out of the MGS games I played the first one more than any of the rest.

I never had a SMS as a kid, but the "rich" kid up the street had a SMS (and an NES with R.O.B.!) and I would go over every once in a while to play games. We mainly played the NES, but the SMS always had kind of a mysterious exotic, air to it. The NES was king in these parts.
