I bought a console second hand because it's cheap. I don't have the money to build/keep up a PC, and truthfully I'm lazy and want to buy a product that, like many others, will do all this for me.

I'm sure all companies would cede all sales to whoever releases one first. Or maybe they'd just try and capture the market through competition, like TVs, Blu-Ray players, PCs, or any number of things...
I'm seeing the main, and totally legitimate, issue with this is that innovation would be stunted because of lack of competition. My thoughts about that (which may be off base, I'm pre-med, not a business major :-p ) are:

Gamefly isn't the fastest thing in the world, but it has, like you said, allowed me to play a lot of games I wouldn't have otherwise. I think its worth it.
