You can say housing is cheaper, but I could live in my city in 1985 on a beginning lab tech's salary, and now I can't as a mid-career scientist. I put myself through my last two years of college; kids these days don't have a hope of doing that.
You're ignoring that most of the big-ticket items have skyrocketed. Housing, college tuition, and health insurance are all far more expensive than 30 years ago.
