I think they may even have started the whole billionaires giving their fortune away thing, way before Mackenzie. They provided the seed money for The Global Fund over 20 years ago. 

Um.... Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has been giving away millions and millions for years! They have deeply supported two organizations I have worked with... And gave me the seed money to start an organization focused on HIV/AIDS and TB in CIS region. Her impact has been huge especially on global health.
