I'd argue that the new pokemon games can't have the same sense of "wow this is amazing" because it was the first time you ever could be a pokemon trainer before. If that makes sense.

No it's not. It would be perfectly legal for a company to go after a copyright infringer even of they were making no money at all. Money is likely to attract the attention of the copyright holder faster; that's the main difference.
