OMG, it frustrates me to this day that xenogears was held back by that mediocre fluff of a love story that was final fantasy eight.

I'm more inclined to think it's set in the same time, ala. Star Ocean 2 or Dragon Rider of Pern, exept DA is in it's own planet, where humanity have lost their ties to the majority of technology.

We really should point out that mages' abilities are fueled and expanded by lyrium, a mysterious blue substance which when processed in certain ways can grant or enhance a person's capabilities, even granting impossible powers (but ultimately not without debilitating mental side effects.)
