These two things have zero equivalence because trump was talking about boogeymen from his proudly racist imagination, and the original comment, and this video, are based off real white people’s actions. And I didn’t bring sitting quietly in corners into this at any point. Again, that’s just your defensive

That’s your defensive interpretation. Nothing about the original comment reads to me as saying all white people did this. If people aren’t talking about you, you don’t need to point out that they’re not talking about you.

You’re looking at this backwards. It’s not “all white people are hysterical over Beyonce’s latest video”. It’s “All the people hysterical about Beyonce’s latest video are white.”

....You don’t think those exact same people are thrilled that Janet’s career stalled for years following that halftime show? Also, Janet didn’t flash anything. Justin Timberlake pulled on her costume, revealing her breast. I know your comment is meant in jest, but it rests on really shaky ground.

I’m YELLING. I will never, ever, ever unsee this!

Which protests are those, exactly? How many ambulances were blocked, how many sick and injured people were cut off from care, and what were the cosequences of those delays? If you care enough to begin and end your comment with this issue I’m sure you’re well informed about it. Every time I’ve been on Twitter during a

Don’t broach a subject until they’re ready for the truth. Is that really so absurd to you?

This was a thought provoking appearance. I kind of think the shallowness of the seat switch sort of demonstrated the flaw of our current concept of Diversity. Yeah, they switched seats, but the power differential is completely unchanged. I don’t know if that’s what Colbert intended, but I like it.

I’m certain there was a purpose, though it’s true it wasn’t clear from what we saw.

I hear you, but DeRay handles all media appearances in this intentional way, where he uses the same phrases repeatedly and explains them very simply. It’s a solid strategy for getting the basic concepts into mainstream dialog. Look how well it’s worked for conservatives, even while being totally divorced from reality

What you’re missing is the significance of a young reader’s first exposure to the concept being pictures of slaves smiling while they bake a cake for America’s first president.

I’m replying to this sad comment for two reasons. The first is it’s not a straw man argument when you list things that can easily be found happening in real life. The second is that reparations are most certainly called for, in addition to other measures to correct or mitigate the harm that has been done to Native

Yeah, it’s kind of like the “but I have a black friend” defense applied to publishing.

Yikes. But a staggering number of people do end up saying things like this if they actually discuss slavery. Sure, we all know to answer “yes” if directly asked if slavery was wrong, but there is a lot of ahistorical nonsense mixed in with our understanding of the reality of slavery.

Considering the business ties (which it’s my understanding Tsai Ing-wen helped author/negotiate), I think it’s highly unlikely. But certainly not impossible!

Comments like these blithely assume that all people consider slavery inuversally terrible, and a deeply shameful part of American history, but this isn’t the reality at all. There are politicians who talk about the good that slavery did for black people and black families (!!!), and George Washington in particular is

My pleasure! My Chinese is too crappy to allow me to read most primary sources, and I’ve noticed flaws in almost every English article I’ve read about this. There’s a lot of nuance to the situation.

You’re overgeneralizing the information in that article. The cited Chinese organizations are certainly posturing to discourage any moves toward independence, but you won’t find a direct quote from Tsai Ing-Wen herself that states independence as a goal. Here’s a source that actually looks at Taiwan, and quotes Ms.

Considering that this is the 2nd time in history a DPP, or any non-KMT candidate has won the presidency, I wouldn’t worry about a statistical relationship. A cursory knowledge of the current GOP pool should reassure even further.
