The biggest issue with audio books for me is selection. For my library system the selection of audio books is very poor for my taste.

Yeah it looks like it has some extra parts in the mix. You would only really need the RPi+Scripts the Wifi is only needed if you don't want to run Cat5. The RPi has all the capabilities built in he is using on the Arduino.
Yeah but with this you just need to carry your phone. Your WiFi encryption acts as your security.

What I did was set it up with a Raspberry Pi and small 1TB external drive. I ran the initial sync at my house over my LAN and then move the device off site once the initial sync was done. The software automatically finds the other linked clients across the internet.
I set it up to work with a Raspberry PI and 1TB usb drive and it works great. Low power and always on and syncing. The setup was a breeze as well.
