I think age or parenthood might have a part to play in the emotional connection in the game as well. The story is really about a father and his child if the player has kids I think the story has a much better chance of grabbing you emotionally.
For me it was just more justification for not follow the development process. I personally hate spoilers be it movies, games or whatever. So when I played the game all I knew it was a Bioshock game set in a cloud city and there was A.I. companion that had some undefined powers and she is key to the plot. Otherwise…
To me it seemed that a lot of the negative comments were based upon features that were promoted pre-release and never made it into the actually game. Also there was a great deal of hype that some people bought into and felt let down.
I did the math and figured out the ending fairly early on, but I found the voice acting and the graphics just created a very immersive experience that really had me hooked.

I didn't want to get too specific because everyone situation is different. I just think most people should ask themselves "Do I really need a paper copy of this, can I just as easily keep it as a scanned PDF?"
