I can see your point and where the article is going but selling the nation building of Somalia to any western power at this point just isn't going to happen. The US wasted all it nation building capital in the world in the major screw ups of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Everyone remembers the total disaster the last intervention in Somali was so no one is yet willing to really fix the problem. The problem with pirates is to fix the problem you have to take their bases on land. Attacking these types of pirates at sea is like playing wack a mole.

Australia seems to be a good answer. Nice geologically stable continent with lots of available land. Now all we need is a big hole.

I think it goes back to the founding of the country as well as the war of 1812. Heck even the nation anthem is about standing up to an invasion force. It is a core factor in the birth of the nation and one of the few things that people remember for American history in crammer school.
