Oh, be sure you're plugged into a GFCI (ground fault) protected outlet for any work putting electricity near water—there's no life hacking, if you ain't alive anymore.

There should probably be a Harbor Freight tag on this and there should probably be lots of posts about the wonders (high and low) of HF. If you are careful and do a little net due diligence, you can get some fine, helpful stuff for ridiculously cheap there. Sign up for their email coupons and it gets even better. …
I've used "bar control" for a while, allowing any shortcut to be placed on the status bar. I like it a lot. Haven't tried this one, yet, so can't compare, but sounds similar. Those wanting the functionality, but unable to find SmartBar, might give bar control a try.
@dmckibben: Airplane mode, activate gps. If you have an accident or witness something that needs reporting or just recording, at least you've got a phone.

@facelvega: the answer to the questions in your last paragraph are absolutely and based on long experience, "yes!"
Comments to the effect that local cops and courts don't get the funds from DUI/DWI and other traffic fines are parochial. In many localities, that's primarily how the local courts and po-po are funded. The more the feds take from limited tax bases, the more that has become true.
Is this the level of discernment we can expect from the corporate lifehacker? Seems a sad slide to mediocrity and uselessness. BTW, Evernote is a pretty crappy project management tool—it's an info locker—onenote can work as an outlining tool, but project management? Really. In that sense, the aggregation with txt…
A hidden fuel cut off switch is, imho, the best anti-theft device. A thief may be able to get the car started, but it won't go far and when it dies, it'll likely be in the middle of the road—instant PoPo attention. Thieves expect typical electronic security systems, but probably won't anticipate this. Caveat—may…
Yeah, this makes flights a wwwhhhhooollllee lot more secure. Next comes the rfid chip at the base of the skull. Good luck with all the protestations you may want to make about alternative ID and your freedoms—TSA are bureaucrats. They don't answer to anyone, really. And they will prevent you traveling, just to…
I think most "bookshelf" and "floor" speakers are designed with the expectation that they'll be placed close to a wall or even on a shelf on a wall. The wall is necessary to produce the designed base response. Of course, if you have crappy muddy bass producing speakers, putting them near a wall will make it worse,…
Julbo glacier googles (sorta like their current Micropores—don't seem to make mine anymore)—best "sun glasses" I ever wore. Very very dark though. Got 'em for about $15 mail order in the mid-70's. Other pref, RayBan Baloramas. Julbos could be the definition of ugly-beautiful—so durable and compact/flat-folding, but…
@jbarr: Very good analysis/advice. However, my idea of working around my company's lame IT restrictions simply involves having my own laptop with my own stuff on it. Everyone should have their own 'puter and sufficient portable media to move working files quickly in case of emergency. That probably doesn't work as…
To a guy who hasn't and doesn't want to get involved with FB, but has a few "networks" of friends who like/need to get together and commiserate long distance or at off-hours, this looks pretty interesting. Annual NOLA Jazz Fest reunion planning may just have gotten a lot simpler (be forwarned, Da Fest's a week later…
@Jes St.Lawrence: I was introduced to Grant's Scotch a long time ago and still find it a better than "decent" cheap scotch. Made by the Glenfiddich distillers, though no Glenfiddich, for sure. Grant's in the summer—tall tea glass, full of ice, Grant's poured to fill. I could never do that with a single malt, but…
@Eric Ragle: If gender shouldn't matter in this context (and I agree that it shouldn't and objectively doesn't) why should it matter the gender of their little graphic? The service does not require entry of a Mrs. prefix. The service is available to singles. Carping about such things is more a sign of entrenched…
@Daniel Bentley: Cooking for 1 is the ultimate culinary liberty—you make what you want how you want it and eat it when and how you want. But it's rarely worthwhile to make anything that requires a recipe for just one serving. When I cook for only myself, I always make several servings—usually 4. Eat one, keep one…
Very interesting use of what I presume to be ebony laminate flooring on the wall. I think I may well try that somewhere at home.
Still wondering how astroglide really turned out better than judicious use of soapy water for freeing up the handlebar grips—had to use water to wash it off anyway? How about using vegetable oil—friendlier than dino oil, but still oil, just don't leave it to "dry" on stuff, 'cause it'll just get gummy.
@TheFu: Yup, good enough is relative—Capt. Sullenberger, pilot on US Airways 1549 a/k/a, "miracle on the Hudson" certainly took "good enough" about as close to perfect as it gets.
