I've got 1600 points and I have every expensive item they've offered for a while now. Finally something worth spending some chunk of coins on. Keep adding more Nintendo, many of us are thirsty for new stuff like this!

When you earn coins, they both work towards increasing your level towards Platinum and also add to the overall balance. Once you spend them, that does not affect where you are with regards to getting Platinum or dropping you if you're already there. Hope that makes sense...
