It much closer towards the Digital Devil side of the spectrum, with the character development along the lines of Persona. Strange Journey was much colder and straight along both lines, but more as a design choice than anything else given the games story.

Both Devil Survivor: Overclocked and Devil Survivor 2 (for the DS) are very good strategy RPG games, and both can be just as challenging (if not more so at times) than Fire Emblem.

The SMT team is a different development team than the Persona team, and their character designs have almost always looks similar to this.
