Terrible reviews (usually) means less annoying people in the theatre when I go see it! Woo-hoo!
I must admit to a fondness for both Vin Diesel and Jason Statham for the same reasons.
I wanted to say something mature and insightful. But all I have is:
Bad Astronomy’s Phil Plait, for heroically beating back the stupid on the interwebs (aka the modern equivalent of the labor of Sisyphus).
The Brain Scooper herself...Emily Graslie!
This is quite a few years ago now, but I was walking home with my headphones on, music blasting, and a man on a bike came up behind me and slowed down to keep pace with me. I kinda heard him speak but I kept walking because, hey, I have headphones on, he can’t expect me to hear him. When I didn’t respond, asshole…
I’ll allow it.
All I have to say to anyone who concerns themselves with my body and my rights, is this:
The Hero’s Journey™: The gift that keeps on giving for lazy screenwriters and bad fantasy novelists.
God, he's just so pretty.
It may very well be true that you did not know many women 10, 15, or 20 years ago who read scifi. This does not mean that they did not exist. This is a perception problem I work on with my college writing students all the time—your experience does not equal everyone’s experience. Moreover, you may have known women who…
There’s a thriving fashion scene in Botswana. Clothing is a significant part of culture and personal expression pretty much everywhere, even in places you may think of as “the other”.
I think we should call it the Nolan-ing.
for reals, i’m so tired of the idea that grimdark/gritty dark automatically equals some sort of depth and maturity in storytelling when on its own all it is is dull and dark and depressing as fuck. there ARE some works that are dark but also tell an interesting and involving story, but hollywood seems fixated on the…
I know it sounds facetious, but I like gritty and dark when it’s done well (just as I like upbeat and joyful done well). That’s where Hollywood keeps missing the point. They don’t bother to do it well, they just want to bang or something superficially similar so they can make that sweet sweet Dark Knight bank.
“grim dark” on it’s own doesn’t bestow maturity or depth. Having more shocking deaths and messed up happenings doesn’t by default add to a story. When it’s done well it adds a nice element of realism and unpredictability. It can be a nice antidote to cliched story telling and can raise the stakes. But when it’s…
At a certain level of grittiness the story becomes less of how these characters react in a particular situation and more about what would happen if the creator were a malevolent god. What kind of horrors would they visit on the heroes.
I actually agree; I actually love “gritty dark” movies, but lately its become a go-to for movies and instances where it shouldn’t be (Fantastic Four), and seems to be used, as the OP put it, in place of actually having a compelling story or character development. Its become an overused device, in that its used in…
I call it “Nolan-ization” myself.
