In defence of the US, it's probably because when you say a date, you could say (for example) "April the tenth, 2014". In that respect, 05/10/14 would make sense.

Went one step further and just removed my account. My old company basically forced me to make an account for "Online presence". I've found little to no value from having it and just get stupid 'endorsements' and adds from random-ass people that I've never met, let alone had a professional relationship with.
