Honestly, I don't really care and Toyota's strategy works like you already mentioned. A large percentage of Corolla owners probably don't even know how many gears their transmission is equipped with and probably wouldn't even notice the difference if they had one extra gear.

According to Wikipedia, Toyota were selling Corollas with 4-speed automatics back in 1987. 26 years later, it's the base model transmission choice.

The target weight for the next M3 is supposed to be close to that of the E46 M3 coupe. I think that's a great target considering it'll have a bit more power and way more torque than the current E90 M3.
