To me, the Halo universe is just a series of events across different media. To get the full story, you have to experience everything. It's not unlike watching a TV series or reading a book series, in my opinion, just over a smattering of media.

I've always been of the opinion that if you care about the story, you'll read the supporting material. I realize lots of people don't have that opinion, however, whether constrained by time or not enjoying reading.

I'd say Halo 4's campaign was massive progress, especially having read the book preceding it.
