If you remove the battery completely and your car has a points style ignition then maybe. If you have an electronic ignition (most cars after 1970 or so) you won’t get any spark. Also most cars from the 60's and earlier had a generator, not an alternator, so they don’t even have the problem.

It can be but you have to have a machine shop bore out the bearing caps while they are on the engine. They make special oversize bearings that you can use if you have to bore the main cap oversize. Kind of like how you can use oversize pistons if you have to bore out the cylinders.
