The hand crank solution is good to keep in your car glove compartment, because if you use it for emergencies or out of the way places where you are far from other communications, the shortened battery life in the long term is not going to matter to you.

@sdreelin: Slow cookers don't get teh high heat required for carmelizing. The onions in fact usually retain some of their shape and firmness even after hours in a slow cooker, in my experience.

OpenOffice has epub plugins to publish as .epub, which can be used on most eReaders, including my Sony. No middle steps involved. I love Calibre, no doubt, and every eReader owner should have it, but if you want control over the look of the text, use OpenOffice.

And the ideal angle towards the screen is 20 degrees slightly downward. I had an ergonomic assessment due to back pain fifteen years ago, and have been following the desk height and eye angle rule since, with good results.
