I quit using wallpapers back in the 90's when they really did impact performance. Properties, Select None for wallpaper, goto Appearance, and make the Windows Classic desktop the darkest non-black blue(to distinguish from an off monitor) possible. Easy to replicate on any new computer I use. Home again!

If you use the milk carton trick with a 2litre soda pop bottle, buy cola, don't drink it, and pour the whole thing into the sink overnight (even if you get the sink unclogged), to eat away and the gunk that is clogging the sink. Coke and Pepsi brand are remarkably corrosive to hair, grease, and other such ickies.

While I prefer paraffin solutions (from cub scout days) the main thing is to remember in cold environments to have a safe source of heat available. As a Canadian I have been stranded a couple times in -20 to 30C (-5 to -10F) temperatures with 2-hour wait times in the pre-cell days.
