F&F already recruited Helen Mirren. I’d love to see a James Spader / Helen Mirren / Jason Statham combo.

How is this not a Torchinsky article?

The original Loewy Avanti is actually fairly different from the Avanti II that continued production into the 1980s. The roof is more curved and the overhangs are shorter, vertically. It’s a prettier car. I never realized until I saw the two cars side-by-side.

Yeah, this. It’s a screaming bargain compared to a 911 GTS. Although you can still get a manual transmission on the 911, so that might tip the balance.

+1. Every time I get into an Avalon it strikes me that’s it’s *actually* what most people mean when they describe a “luxury car.” It’s impeccably engineered & assembled, and all the materials are quite nice to see and touch. It’s very quiet, and very comfortable. There’s a lot of legroom in the back. It’s got enough

It’s *really* nice to see good investigative journalism. Three cheers to Felton and the Jalopnik editors for publishing it despite the risks.

Ah! Yeah, I’d always mentally recorded that as a “high-risk” corner, but never realized just how steep the drop-off is. Thanks for the education.

Serious question: What corner is that? I’ve done a lot of laps at Thunderhill and don’t recall a rollover hazard. I should probably keep it in mind for the upcoming Lemons race!

I get it. I think it’s hilarious and awesome.

The higher-mileage S would be my choice, too. Porsches do fine with high mileage: I’d rather buy a used Porsche that had recently been a daily driver vs. a garage queen that got started up infrequently.

Would you rather have a Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo, or use the $175k to buy a used E63 Estate and a 997.2 GT3?

“Longevity” and “drives well” are two different axes of automotive goodness.

An E36 M3 3.2L (US Spec) does 0-60 in 5.5s and the 1/4 mile in 14.1. That’s still faster than the fastest V-6 Camry.

C4 ZR1s and Grand Sports are already climbing - I’m surprised it took them this long.

I think you’re right, and in fact I think every Prelude from the 2nd gen forward is likely to have some sort of run up in value. They’re *all* fun to drive, and they’re the kind of car that lots of guys could have as a weekend toy without killing themselves on maintenance.

Yeah, I’ve been watching this trend and shaking my head. All those K-car-based Dodges were just shit back in the day. Even the Shelby versions were shit, just faster and with more torque steer.

Yup. Both of those are already climbing, and neither of them ever depreciated that far to begin with.

The GTO for sure. It goes, stops, *and* turns well, and it had the best interior that GM made at that point. It’s kind of a Yankee Aston Martin. Underrated in its day just because the styling wasn’t shouty enough, but its driving dynamics and interesting backstory will put it on the “classic” list.

I think that’s right. There’s going to be a lot of nostalgia for the last non-turbo M-cars. And somewhat to my surprise, the E92 M3 is both more fun to drive and (seems to be) more durable than the E46 M3.
