It definitely needs to have that G-Class Mercedes ability to mob over curbs.

Oooookay, I gotta ask: What does the “virtual spanker” do?
The fun thing about those is that the 924 bell housing mates up happily to a VW/Audi 1.8T 20-valve. So an engine swap and an old 924 tranny (cheap) and you’ve got 944 Turbo S speed on a 944 8V budget.
It’s basically the starting grid for a Lemons race 6 months from now.
You are doing God’s work. We already wish there were more 6-speed E39's left, and in 10 years this will only be more true.
“Unlimited,” no?
Here’s the finish last year - DPI, GTLM, and GTD were *all* close finishes. Good racing.
Think of it as the 30k mile service (although the car picks the mileage itself based on use pattern / oil conductivity). Full flush of brake fluid / transmission / coolant, replacement of all filters of all kinds, lubrication of everything that slides or twists. It *should* be $5-800.
Feh. I just paid $1200 for the “B” service on my W220 Mercedes, bringing my total cost of ownership for 3.5 years, including the initial purchase + consumables like tires and brakes, to $305/month.
I don’t think so - I think it was the prior model when they first put it on the Taurus/Sable platform and gave it the 3.0L V-6. He wasn’t particularly car-oriented so I was really surprised that he was so vocal about hating that Conti.
One man’s “dated” is another man’s “classic.” I’m probably in the target demographic for this thing, and I really like the way it looks.
Indeed, it was actually worse than the body-on-frame Town Car, which was on the “fat Panther” platform. The last-of-run Town Car Signature Series L’s, with the stretched wheelbase and get-freaky-on-the-way-to-the-airport sized backseat, are awesome.
The OBDII cars tended to throw codes for silly reasons, and Varioram could be a pain in the ass. (Hence why the 1995s are sought-after.) And doing an alignment on the rear suspension takes a lot of patience.
Yup, this. Europe is bristling with automated speed cameras. Cheap to implement, no dangerous chasing. There’s no reason for special-purpose robots to be humanoid.
Have indeed wrenched on both. Owned a ‘95 993, self-maintained, and dismantled a 996 to swap the motor into a friend’s Boxster.
Indeed. Nobody ever wrote a song called “Fuck The Fire Department.”
The interior, though...the interior is inexcusable. Even if it weren’t made of truly non-durable and cheap-feeling plastic, it was ugly then and is still ugly. Later 996s with fancy options did fix a lot of the materials problems, but
GM actually makes really good SUVs. The Equinox already has the V-6 - just drop in the turbo version from the ATS-V. We know damn well that people will pay stupid money for a 400-horse midsize mom-mobile. Why is GM not sucking up some of that sweet, sweet suburbanite cash?
Love your analysis, and completely agree.
