I am not sure about hiring practices in the private sector, so I cannot speak to that. However, in university labs, most graduate programs are working hard to recruit URM students. Especially in the meagre funding climate of today, the NIH URM supplement can sometimes mean the difference between a PI’s lab remaining…
Not sure that is any longer the case - for instance, the NIH will add a minority supplement to any PI’s grant if he/she is mentoring a minority grad student.
