I think the big problem is that, while the numbers used to be connected to displacement, they clearly have nothing to do with it anymore but the automakers never explicitly stated they were moving away from that so it just leaves things confusing. Today, the numbers really just mark a particular car's relative…
I wonder how many people know that wipers are not really needed in most rainy conditions. Unless it is coming down really hard or a super fine mist that creates millions of tiny droplets I don't turn mine. In average rain at most speeds the droplets should move right off the windscreen.
