I'm running 8.1 on a Mid-2011 Macbook Air with 4GB of RAM and an old Intel i5 processor. Parallels lets you adjust how much RAM and HDD space you allocate to your Windows machine, and even lets you readjust it if you change your mind later. When you're on battery power, it'll also scale down some less useful functions…

It'll basically run Windows as a full-screen application and integrates very nicely with your Mac (i.e. - you can access files from both OSes simultaneously). I use it for Visual Studio development.

From my limited time with some of the engineers, I think there's room for opinions, but as with any giant bureaucracy, it never really gets implemented unless you're a senior :(
