That's a pretty interesting way to do it. Thermal compound isn't really as difficult as many people make it out to be, but installing a motherboard and putting an aftermarket heatsink can be a bit of a time consuming/annoying task so I can see the rationale of your method. I'll have to remember that for the future!

I don't know, I would think the S.o.L. for places like Los Angeles or NYC would be a bit higher, but I'm honestly just too lazy to look it up. I'd agree that $40k/yr. after taxes should be sufficient in most all of the U.S. to live off of though.
