It was the tradeoff between more features and battery life. Running a browser, apps that pull from servers, 3G, HSPA+, LTE, pushing mail - it all adds up.
They're talking about the screen being smaller. It'd probably be close to the same size as a whole device, but if your screen is thinner, yet more efficient, that can lead to less power consumption.
I found the Razr to be a great form factor. I could see it being annoying if you were trying to hold it up with your shoulder, but I talked on that thing for hours on end without much issue.
