It was a lack of paying attention to the details in the article as compared to the headline. I assumed the article was "exercise can help pick up your spirits," not "exercise will reduce symptoms of depression." Completely my fault.
I didn't have diagnosed depression, but I completely missed that in the article. I had thought it meant "exercise can help cheer you up," as per the headline.
The indirect results of exercise are enough to make me feel good long after the "runner's high" or whatnot has worn off - seeing myself in the mirror compared to what my physique was a few months or a year ago, etc.
