Mk I Lotus Cortina.

Now playing

Before Lotus started wearing the liveries of tobacco companies, it raced in the company colors of green and yellow, made famous in this country by Jim Clark's 1965 win at Indianapolis. They even painted the "bundle of snakes" exhaust pipes yellow to complete the color scheme. The gold over black JPS cars look terrific

Will the U.S. military sell surplus MRAPs to regular folks, rather than just government police agencies?

Anyone willing to bet that the Fort Word police department has ever issued a ticket for a police cruiser not having its parking brake set?

Alan Mulally has maintained his home near Seattle. That's one reason why he may take the top job at Microsoft. Fields probably spends more time in Detroit than in Florida. I don't like the idea of CEOs who commute via First Class or private jet, but it can conceivably be justified on the basis of what it takes to keep

So, how many news items will there be about Henry Ford spinning in his grave faster than a Model T crankshaft once Fields, who is Jewish, starts running Ford Motor Company? It's actually no surprise. While Henry Ford was a notorious Jew-hater, his grandson, Henry Ford II, was a good friend to the Jewish community,

It won the inaugural race at Sebring in 1950, beating Ferraris and Allards.

What, no love for the Crosley HotShot? The first American sports car, the first production car with disc brakes. Here's one doing the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca.

The clown driving/riding was part of the Jimmie Lynch Death Dodgers thrill show. Lynch was a former Plymouth dealer and he did advertising for the brand.

Someone at VW must have seen the Model X prototype Studebaker pitched to Westinghouse to use as a service and delivery vehicle. You can see it in the basement of the Studebaker Museum in South Bend. Since this post is about VWs, not far from the Model X prototype is an experimental 4 cyl horizontally opposed engine

they can only be appreciated when they're seen in their full, real, three-dimensional glory instead of on a computer screen

This is a grade A shit show now. But why?

You might also enjoy seeing Snake and Mongoo$e, which is being released next week. It's about Don Prudhomme and Tom McEwen. In some ways their relationship makes a better story than that of Lauda and Hunt. Plus, Hotwheels. Interestingly, it's the true life stuff that seems melodramatic, I guess that's how things are.

My favorite hood/fender mounted tell-tale, the tachometer integrated into the hood scoop of the AMC The Machine:

One word: Corvair.

Matt, if possible you should try to add a screening of Snake and Mongoo$e to the Jalopnik Film Festival. I enjoyed it enough at the Detroit premiere that I watched it again when they sent me a review DVD.
