Where are you seeing traffic? In Manhattan the major avenues are seeing about the same amount of traffic as they do at 3-4am (two lanes of traffic, 30mph average speed). I’ve been walking dead down the middle of side streets and downtown.

Spoken like somebody who’s never been to New York. There is NO traffic in New York right now. Even curbside parking is available, which, trust me, as a car owner in New York, is something absolutely unheard of. Closing a few streets would affect essentially nothing traffic-wise, and it would have the key benefit of…
Right, which is what’s so funny about this. As the owner of an early 2000s BMW with an engine from the same family, when I think of concepts like ‘reliability,’ ‘durability,’ and ‘simplicity,’ there are some other brands that come to mind first. But I kind of love this mad project.
What are you, a UPS shareholder? Why would Torch have any responsibility to include something as obvious as that in the article?
I’m about as pinko commie as you get around these parts, but I think that’s something we just have to make peace with as car guys. The machines that impress us are always going to be ostentatious, and the owners of the really special stuff are always going to be wealthy. I still admire the cars, and I find some of the…
Given that this is Canada, where the people are nice, my odds are that the pickup driver was hoping to pull over a little down the road, where there was a safer shoulder to stop. But I also put a chunk of my savings in the market about two weeks ago, so I’ve been wrong before.
With the added benefit, in the case of my 2001, of nobody confusing you for a rich guy and treating you as such. Age is a wonderful thing.
Custom critical tends to run sleepers, no?
You did wonderful work here. I used to check Jalopnik once or twice week ten years ago, and now I find myself on here many times a day. My boss won’t have any kind words for you, but it’s a small testament to a wonderful website managed with a strong sense of journalistic ethics and playful seriousness.
Good on you for getting Laguna Seca. Blue BMWs are the way to go. I’m a biased owner a Stahlblau metallic E46, which is a great color they unfortunately eliminated. I never understood why, especially when it’s subtle enough to work for a fleet car (grey in some light) while still a light blue in the right light.
I used to meditate on this concept a lot. My E46 was burning about 1 quart every thousand, so after an 8k road trip I’d completely refilled the oil tank. I was reassured that consumption was acceptable. Who says BMW aren’t cost-effective?
I think he’s suggesting the driver consciously drove in a way that made this possible. It’s difficult to go airborne at 45mph, or whatever the posted limit on this road was. Accident implies a confluence of fate, some bad luck. It’s a bit different when you go fast enough to reach brief vehicular orbit after hitting a…
Excited for the new M3!
Never checking oil?
Yeah, little baffled by the concern about those lights. That’s plain and normal for a 1990s-early 2000s car lit up with the key in position 1 or 2. My current E46 shows the same symbols before every crank...the simplest of all of those being the parking brake, which isn’t even a real idiot light. Now, my first E46…
I’ll answer that for him: Is a Republican in office?
That interior is worth $40,000.
Unfortunately, he’ll be in poverty by the time he leaves his first track day. But he’ll be happy. 318is is a pretty fun little speciality item though, and hey, even airbags!
By David Tracy’s logic, sounds like you’re actually in the market for a dozen cars!
Think the price is off though...I’d bet that BaT car sells for at least twice, maybe three times the current bid. Yes, the -e cars are a discount but it’s damn hard to find a good E30 and keep it running without spending $10-15k fairly quickly. For this buyer’s purposes, that’s a little pricey. Market-wise I think the…
