You’re assuming that boomers raised in postwar times are going to be comfortable getting into car that has no driver. Online banking and smartphones are a stretch for many over 70.
Unfortunately, we are going to see a shitstorm over the next for a variety of reasons, least of not which the poorly concepted tariffs that will cause consumer prices and the cost of raw materials to skyrocket, a mass deportation that will leave a huge gap in the workforce that no lazy-ass Americans are willing to…
These guys are money pimps. They don’t know, or care to know, how the auto industry works. They just want to generate churn in auto stock values. They don’t even care if it’s up or down, because they can make money either way.
So this is essentially GMC’s version of the Hummer EV? Another major issue with these huge trucks is they don’t fit in garages of houses that were built more than 25 years ago. One of my neighbor has a Hummer EV and has to park it outside since it is significantly smaller than their garage door opening.
I would love to know the backstory. This sounds like some kind of collective employment suicide pact. How horrible must it have been to work there?
A lot of times keys are in the rental cars... it’s getting past the gate in the rental car garage/lot that is the challenge. Not sure if they have to manually open the gate as well.
National has cars waiting with keys in and you’re assigned a row to go and take a car from or a car specifically depending on the location. I want to say some Hertz locations do too, but it’s been a while since I rented from Hertz as my company has a sweetheart with Enterprise and National.
I’ve been to a rental location (I think Hertz, even) where you show up, get a text for what parking space your car is parked, and the car is just unlocked with the keys already inside (!!!). Presumably this system was the one in use there but the guy who was dispatching the text messages went AWOL, so people didn’t…
Sounds about white.
See the court case Finders v Keepers.
The most surprising part about all of this is that Hertz didn’t try to immediately arrest all of the customers.
First off, middle of the pack?? They are entirely hidden from view... on purpose! You really think that is a good idea in any way? If so, please explain. And while you’re at it, go ahead and list all of the cars that also have completely hidden door handles and why they aren’t equally dumb.
I’ve long thought electric door latches are a solution in search of a problem. Doubly stupid because you still need a manual latch, so now you need two latches.
Have you heard of “disruption” good sir?
That only makes the decision to have electric door latches and completely hiding the manual releases all the more dumb knowing that they have caused people to die needlessly in the past.
There should be one handle per door, half pull - electronic, full pull mechanical.
They did know. They simply didn’t care.
My 992 has electronic door handles. If the power fails, guess how you open them? The same way you open them when the power is on. Same lever. It just uses the mechanical latch when there isn’t power. If Teslas were well-designed they would work the same way, but Teslas are low-end garbage.
The Democratic Party should issue one single statement to the American people in early 2028:
